Stephanus Α῎ζωιος, πόλις Παλαιςτίνης, ταύτην ἔκτισεν εἷς τῶ ἐπανελθόντων ἀπ᾿ Ε᾿ρυθρᾶς θαλάςςης φυγάδων, καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς γυναικὸς αὐτοῦ Α῎ζας Ἁ῎ζαν᾿ ὠνόμασεν, ὅ ἐςτι χίμαιραν ἥν Α῎ζωτον μετέφρασαν, ubi φυγάδας Phoenices intelligit, quos e mari Rubro venisse volunt. Sed haec mere sunt fabulosa. Neque enim Phoenicum fuit, sed Philistaeorum urbs Azotus. Capra quidem Phoenicibus aza dici potuit, ut ez Hebraeis. Sed in Hebraica scriptura, ez capra, et Asdod, i. e. Azotus nihil quicquam habent simile. Asdod autem proprie robur soant: vox est apud Arabas frequens; Inde Dei nomen saddai Graeci reddunt Παντοκράτορα.
